in celebration of an 18 year Anniversary

We know some kewl people that have withstood the test of time. I was listening to the morning show on KDAY this morning (okay, I think Steve Harvey is, although quite colorful, a hilarious and often inspiring christian) - and nephew Tommy's tip was glamorous does not go with ghetto.

Why they make me think of that I don't know - but I think some people try to move away from difficult times to better days, and they just bring the difficulties with them. The gist of it is our friends have seen harder days and struggles, and not that it's all glam now, but they are certainly going from glory to glory to glory!

Congratulations dear friends on your Valentine 18th Anniversary! You know who you are ;-)! May the Lord bless your lifetime of love! Here's to ya - One Life/One Love!

Weider to lose or not to lose; that is the question ...

ok, the Weider is not here. The Team Brown promised it Thursday; but no. And then Friday; but no. Still its okay. It would have been a great time to have it put together; but, as it ended up, I was not up to starting the program. So, God willing, it will arrive tomorrow. And as I mentioned, the garage is clean. Salvation Army is picking up on Wednesday, and the rest not thrown away as sheer junk is going to the Agape House or to some friends that make trips to Mexico to help children there. It is a good thing we are doing.

But today, right now, I'm putting myself out there. This morning my weight was 203.6. Yes, there's no typo there, sadly. I'm pretty tired of looking at myself. No, I'm not here to whine. I'm here to do something about it and, win or lose, I'm going to be honest. I have made a goal to lose 20 pounds. When I made the goal (last week) my starting weight was 193.9. So ... obviously I'm not heading in the right direction currently and my goal has increased. However, one of the factors is let's say a cyclical hormonal thing, so I truly expect it to cycle down next week; we'll see.

Anyways, I've secured the Ace to be my accountability buddy; we'll do that mutually. She's honest and encouraging and works in the health industry. Sometimes people compete - make bets and such - and while that can be highly motivating, I think this way is less stressful. It's similar to independent study rather than a 'race'. As such, I don't currently have a deadline, only a determination to meet the goal. I tried to make that goal reasonably attainable so as to not have it be self-defeating. Obviously, I need to lose more than 20 pounds; but I'm making this a step project. God deals with us that way - from glory to glory to glory. The idea is to work out and lose weight and incorporate better eating habits as I go along. I've mentioned that this is my most favored means of exercise, although I didn't mention that I love swimming which is an excellent non-stress form of recreation. Still, currently I don't have the means to take advantage of that form. Sooo ... its Weider time!

The Google page offers add-ons from which I chose The Google 15, a means in which I can track my weight. Currently it is telling me Danger! You're heading away from your goal! Although the plan is to weigh in every day for the most part, I will post an average which the program provides. It helps you visualize and keep track of your progress - it has a chart even. I made the initial measurement 1/17. The average one week ago was 194.3. Let me just say that a daily weigh-in can be counter productive and I'm not concentrating on those numbers, but rather the average. But the better gauge I will be paying attention to is inches - that will be the most telling. Weight gain (not in this case) can be due to fat decrease / muscle build among other things. Muscles weigh more than fat. However, if true body improvement is taking place the inches will tell the story and gradually the weight will correspond.

The plan is to workout on the home gym and the exercise bike and improve my eating habits. Not only should I lose weight, but I should improve my blood pressure and cholesterol, my overall physical health and stamina, and possibly abate any hereditary diabetes. So begins my weight loss journey. I solicit your support and prayers along the way.

'What can Brown do for me'? Deliver! ;-)

A Race Run - Superbowl 2007

This year's Superbowl was noted for two african-american coaches contending for the championship. Not so highly touted was that the self-same two christian coaches (and by that I mean professing and living the life) were vying. Not only that, but the winning team was owned by a christian. After the game Deion Sanders greeted the winning coach as 'my christian brother' on his show. The winning coach gave honorable tribute to the contending coach. And for all that the team had achieved he gave honor to God. A year ago, his son had died at which time he shared that God would see his family through. Both coaches are known for their character and demeanor- the rare coach that doesn't have to raise his voice to lead his people.

While more and more, I see athletes stand for God in professional sports, never before have I see such an unadulterated witness and tribute to who He is! It was a joy to behold and a beacon to closet disciples everywhere to not be ashamed! Praise God! The question is not whether God favored one over the other. Rather the answer is that both coaches knew that, regardless of the outcome, God is able and to God be the glory! Hebrews 12:1.

On an opposite note, did you know the NFL took a stand against churches having Superbowl parties? Well, regardless of the outcome until the race is done, God is able and to God will be the glory!

  • Lilies of the Field - strict mother superior believes that someone has been sent by God to build a much needed church in the desert. (my favorite even though its relation has nothing to do with the week in particular).
I sense a marathon; hmmm...

Breakfast Crown Experiment

Okay, I'm not much of a cook ... but due to my now long enjoyed freedom with the husband being the chief cook, I have fun trying new dishes. I love our ladies group the CKW Fellowship that meets on 2nd Saturdays of each month. Because it's a breakfast, we have delightful eats each occasion. Not particularly confident in my skills, I'm not one to experiment on the unsuspecting; I broke my rule this time with this googled gourmet find.

Now, in reality, it was two recipes - the Santa Fe Breakfast Ring and the bacon, egg and cheese wreath. These two recipes gave me a lot of ideas. I went to the store and purchased:
  • parchment paper (Reynolds actually carries a one side aluminum, one side parchment),
  • eggs,
  • pepper jack cheese (but I had some regular shredded cheese at home)
  • Pillsbury crescent roll package
  • Farmer John link sausage package
  • frozen hash browns with red and green pepper package
  • Philadelphia garlic flavor cooking sauce (because the market didn't have the Santa Fe flavor called out in the Santa Fe recipe)
I had about an hour before I needed to leave for our Fellowship, so I cooked the sausage in small pieces, drained and set to the side. I scrambled the eggs and separate cooked the hashbrowns. I mixed the hashbrowns, eggs, and sausage, and real bacon bits (I had in the house) with half of the garlic flavor cooking sauce. I would have added onion, but didn't have any - my list failed to make it to my phone.

I took a pizza plate with the parchment paper on it and placed the crescent pieces in a circle. I sprinkled it with a bit of mesquite seasoning. I placed the shredded cheese (I would have preferred to use the pepper jack, but didn't want to take the time to shred it) around the circle. Atop that I placed the mix around in a circle. I placed more cheese around the circle. I then placed the ends of the crescent pieces up over these ingredients and sprinkled a final dash of cheese across the top.

I followed the directions to place it in an oven pre-heated to 375 for the required time.

I was punctual!
The ladies loved it!
The crowning glory was the message for the special ladies that come together every 2nd Saturday for this time of fellowship. Jesus was there! He has always been there and is!

However if you like this breakfast idea, there is so much room to play with this recipe. My guys at home don't like cheese, so I probably will remove that for their concoctions except for some pieces designated for me - definitely trying the pepper jack. One could add fresh sliced mushrooms. I even thought of pepperoni. I think having fresh salsa with it is also a very good idea.

As a googling gourmet, this was a fun dish to prepare. Enjoy your variations! Use the links to determine amounts and for pictures that take you step-by-step; I did.

Don'tcha just love how the Lord just brings things together in your head in a neat little package wrapped up like a gift!

Sunday at Couple's study part of what we went over in Moments Together for Couples was Fathers as Servant-Leaders. Well with most this concept sat okay, but with some the discussion was discomfiting. It said:
"Serving his wife rounds out the husband's and father's role. Some men cannot understand the biblical definition of a leader as a servant. Even though He was Lord, Jesus said, "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve" (Matt. 20:28).
As your wife's servant, can you name her top three needs? What worries her? What circumstances quickly put her emotional gas tank on empty?
Men, let me challenge you to lead, to love and to serve."

My wonderful husband was actually able to answer those questions. My point though is for devotion today I was reading Meyer's "Stooping to Rise" and he says:
When our Lord stooped to live visibly amongst men, He refused to avail Himself of the homage due to His original nature. He had been in the form of God, but was content to veil His glory, to assume the form of a servant, to be made in the likeness of men. In the cradle of Bethlehem, in the home of Nazareth, in the voluntary limitations of His earthly ministry, in His obedience to the death of the cross, there was the hiding of His power. He refused to use the attributes of His intrinsic Deity, that He might manifest the Love of God, that He might bear away the guilt of the world, and work out and bring in an eternal righteousness. Therefore He is exalted and bears evermore the name of Jesus---the Saviour of the world.
The Apostle says, let this same mind be in you; think these-thoughts; follow in the steps of Jesus. We must show a holy emulation as to who shall stoop the lowest, and follow the master the closest. The most urgent Matter for each of us to consider is not whether we are orthodox in our creed (though that is not unimportant), but whether at any cost we have the mind which was in Christ, whether at any cost to ourselves we are manifesting the love of God to those around us.
As any of us lead, this is so very important to incorporate into our walk to have any Godly success. Any who know my husband might raise an eyebrow or snicker (now stop that!) when I say he is such a man, because he definitely has a stand-his-ground, firm nature; but he constantly makes an effort to understand, please, and be a blessing to me. I realize too that Jeremiah 5 says the Lord is my Husband and so He initially set the ultimate example.

Thank you Lord for the gift of your Word, your Love, and for the gift of my husband.

a new thing in me

At praise team practice on Friday, my Ace asks me if I would sing with her on Saturday. Now, I am just a minor background voice that gives some quantitative body to our small singing group. Singing is not my gift, but it is a joy. On the other hand, my Ace has a God-given voice to envy some angels I am sure. She had been asked by a friend of hers to sing at their Church's Veteran's day prayer breakfast, to which she readily agreed. She hoped though to get someone to sing with her.

Never in my saved life did I ever imagine just me and someone else in a public singing performance. But the willingness to say 'yes Lord' I've discovered is a mysterious key to wings of eagles adventures to unsuspected places - collecting frequent flyer mileage is highly recommended!

In the movie, the Matrix, there's a Judas character who says he wished he had taken the other pill, made the other choice. But I have never regretted chosing Jesus. I often send people who have gotten a new position and show promising potential in it a congratulatory message quote from the movie, "I got to tell you, I'm fairly excited to see what you are capable of. I mean if Morpheus is right and all. We're not supposed to talk about any of that but if you are, well then this is an exciting time." God has never disappointed me.

Knowing that all glory is God's, I realize our previous worship leader was used of Him when he welcomed me to sing with the group, letting me overcome my nervousness to become comfortable with my voice and using it in front of people. Thank you Rodney.

Thank you Lynn for believing in me. It was wonderful to be used of God simply because I was asked, to support my friend and her lovely voice, and to be complimented for allowing God to be glorified through something only He could do in Me. How weird to stand there and sing praise confidently with my friend among people I didn't know, but who were family in God.

Time and time again He does a new thing in me and I, a work in progress, am always the better for it. To go along for the ride, I simply need to say yes Lord!

So that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new! And all things are from God, the One having reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and having given to us the ministry of reconciliation, as, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not charging their deviations to them, and having put the Word of reconciliation in us. Then on behalf of Christ, we are ambassadors, as God is exhorting through us, we beseech on behalf of Christ, Be reconciled to God. For He made the One who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Cor. 5:17-21

continuing in prayer for Barbara

I dedicate this to Barbara and to my two co-workers quietly fighting cancer as well, Joyce and Cindi, and to all who are called upon to bravely battle against this insidious disease. I am so glad my friends know our Christ Jesus. May the Lord give you strength and peace and above all victory!

Thanks for surrounding me with prayers yesterday as we went to see the surgeon. I truly felt the peace of God as I was there. I read the Psalms in my prayerbook while waiting and wading through the paperwork process and I felt calm when the surgeon came to talk to us. My oncologist had warned me that he did not think the surgeon would be able to help, hence he kept hesitating on the referral. However, the surgeon was straightforward and positive about what he COULD do to help me. He said I formerly had at least 20 sites of cancer in my liver and now there are 6 remaining. Those 6 are all on one side. He recommends cutting out that 1/2 of the liver. He says now is the time as my latest PET shows the cancerous activity beginning again. He feels the chemo. has gotten rid of the other 14 spots but these 6 are 'chemo. resistant' ie have mutated to avoid death by chemo. He said I need to be off the chemo. for one month to clear it out of my body so it will not interfere with the surgery. My last infusion was April 11 and I was suppose to have another infusion this Friday but now I may not. I see my oncologist tomorrow and Erik plans to go with me again so we can see what dr. thinks regarding the surgeon's recommendations. I could be headed for surgery mid-May or early June. YIKES and yet I have to say I am excited that there is something to be done vs. just being told to keep taking chemo. that obviously was beginning to loose its efficacy. The surgeon of course gave his grim statistics about people who have been through this before me. He said 85-90% will have return of cancer in the liver because although the 14 sites are gone, not visible to the scan, in reality they are still in there somewhere just microscopic so eventually they will revive and come back. Of course I am seeking your prayers that those spots will NEVER come back! I already believe that God has removed them! There remains one/two spots on my lung and the surgeon said we should plan on having the pulmonologist remove those surgically too. Soooo it looks like lots of cutting to be done on my body and I know I will go through fears but right now I can say that your prayers for guidance have been answered, your prayers for peace are working! I never would have been this brave w/out the angels God is sending to sustain me. Keep up the fight for us! I was actually smiling during the appointment, only to look at my sweet Erik and see tears brimming as he was once again faced with the fragility of my existence. That was actually the hardest part of my day. I hate this disease in that everyone suffers along with me. We all hurt together because we are one body in Christ. I will keep you updated as we know more. For sure we are going to need your continued support to get through this next surgery and beyond. Thank you all for your willingness to help us in this longterm battle! I love each of you dearly!! To God be ALL Glory. Barbara
FRIDAY, MAY 02, 2008
Here's the latest. Erik went with me to the oncologist on Wednesday afternoon and the dr. agreed with all that the liver surgeon had discussed with us. Sooo he cancelled my chemo. which I would have received today and he texted a message over to the surgeon that I am to be scheduled for surgery any day after May 11. We need specific prayer that the cancer will not grow during this one month break from chemo. , that we can get all the details of our life in order for this next surgery, and that the surgery will be successful and uncomplicated. It is all happening so fast but we know the presence of God in the midst of this journey. Thanks for standing with us as we claim my healing in Jesus' name!
If you in this struggle as well for yourself or someone else, Caringbridge looks to be an place of oasis to unload ones thoughts and gain the prayers of others.

Giant Face Off

God is so so so amazing!

The ladies had an awesome evening at our study! We are still with Max and the 'Cure' - dealt with 'pausing on purpose'. I just love watching the holy spirit move through the room, on people's faces and body movements. It's wonderful to be part of such a thing. We could see our attitude about our giants - the very areas in us where God wants to do His thing. Oh my - not what it should have been.

facing the giants
the aroma of our attitudes ...
about a right spirit in not someone else, me
straight is the path ...
if God's Word say 'do not fear' 365 times, that is at least one for every day
need rain? prepare for rain!
give God your best; let God do the rest
chose not that same ol' tape we play, but to listen and believe the voice of truth

I haven't chosen a school yet, but I was led to have a meeting at Biola Monday. Elisabeth prayed and shared what Biola would be for me and what it would cost. Have to count the cost, don't we. I saw this big ol' giant begin to completely fill the room, but I could still see Elisabeth and hear her tell me about how nothing is bigger than God; that it is all possible. We prayed, and I departed not with hope; but the white towel was still in hand. I was reminded of that at our study.

I had been waiting for God to speak to me about my righteous indignation about a thing at work and how that very indignation smacks of simply feeling bad that I had been passed over. I heard myself saying, at the study when sharing it, that 'indignation that is righteous doesn't not yield in the face of appearances'. God answered me with my own mouth.

We answered these questions, which is where we spent the predominace of our night?
  • what is the reason for your existence in one sentence?
  • does your calender reflect it?
  • if not, how do you bring change to your calendar?
This question was a little too close; we didn't like it? Many of us balked at saying what God had told us as the answer. Surprised? How many of us say God made me talented/pretty/someone people need/a gifted _____ - whatever the answer is? And we dare to speak the answer - our life lies to our calendar!

One lady who had previously felt she had no vision, shared a dream she had long had - she had acted upon it this week. How many of us have these buried treasures.

At our study we were reminded to trust and obey - that God would make us 'Hinds Feet in High Places'. And that if we trust God, there is nothing He cannot do.

I had today off and 'Facing the Giants' was on - hmmm... another Lucado item. I was reduced to tears as God showed me how to face my giants. He is doing something wonderful in my life and the lives of these ladies. So wonderful, that for a moment I saw the one who dances putting on her ballet for which I wrote somethings, and the singer sang, and the artist created the scenery, and the one who speaks to people spoke. Can you see it? He is working in us all.

Some went out, in the O.T. under Joshua, and saw giants, two came back and saw an opportunity to see God's glory.

Because when you go forth with the attitude of however it goes, 'I will still love you Lord'; anything can happen. The circumstances may not change to the naked eye; but they change nonetheless. He meets us in our circumstances, like Daniel's 3 buddies in the fiery furnace. God is answering prayer, healing physical and emotional hurts. His way. In His time. And He's using us.

Let the people see the message He gave you? How's your calendar lookin?

The youngest who was watching the movie with me asked why the people were crying; I was unable to voice the answer. He looked at me and gave me a precious hug and I smiled at him. I was crying too. My rain is coming.

Lord, I'm preparing for rain; help me face my giants! With You, nothing is impossible.

Look at the time

"Look at the time " – I love that I gotta go phrase.

Where did it all go? I seem to have lost one-half month of my life even though, on the whimsical

daylight savings time,
I re-gained a whole hour stolen from me 6 months ago. A don't know who it actually helps; but I hope they don't take the hour back, if I say I dont like it.

Let me ramble in an attempt to account for where some of the time went. If I don't count the all-consuming 3 adult and one non-adult children living in the house and the usual demands of church ministry and a full-time job commute, what do I have left?

Parent teacher conferences
the little man having finished a quarter was reviewed by his teacher with us his parents. It seems he is quite easily distracted with his own preferred interests and just generally fails at being neat or constructing legible, intelligible writing. Some call this laziness or lack of focus or prioritization. I was um disappointed but Dad was really not happy! So while the little man is off-track he has assignments guaranteed to cure what ails him - can't be worse than castor oil!

Medical appointments
there have been various and sundry check-ups. I’ve found that while my blood pressure is better my cholesterol has crashed off the charts. Does health every really just improve?

Chloe's nightmare
a beagle
It's a fact - Dogs like to dig and the closer they are to being a terrier, the more they love it. In fact, just about all breeds of dogs who were developed to hunt are infamous diggers. So you think Fido's habits are the "pits" and you've tried to ban him from the area and scolding is a waste of breath?
crossed with American-staffordshire is a guaranteed recipe for an escape artist.
Many Staffords also like to dig, therefore these dogs may need a more secure environment than some other breeds. An "L" of chicken wire attached to the bottom of the fence can prevent persistent escape artists from successful getaways. Other Staffords are excellent climbers. To prevent vertical exits from the yard, you can top the fence with a horizontal overhang or choose an unusually tall fence.
Our Chloe took another mad dash around the square block but didn’t complete the trip this time. This time she encountered some sort of kill-joy beast that left her with gashes on her hip and a gnarled foot with a hairline fracture. While part of me was screaming ‘see what you get!’ I was so distraught at her condition. I sat beside her hand feeding her water and food (when she wore the ever-offensive cone around her head), dressed her wounds, took her to the vet while he set her leg and provided antibiotics (hidden in pieces of sausage), and cleaned up behind her little accidents in the house because of her inability to be outside as much. She is recovering quite nicely now and being coveted by the other dogs for all the attention she’s getting.

Hostel'ities
I don’t know if we are running a boarding place for ungrown children in the midst of finding themselves – but the food disappears (where is my microwave popcorn?) along with toilet paper and other valuable commodities, the washing machine has died-vacuum cleaner doesn't work anymore, stuff is borrowed and never find its way back, no one wants to do anything because so-and-so should do or doesn't it either, and when dishes and stuff get broken – its all a mystery (maybe we have a haunt
?). Whatever happened to grateful to have a roof over my head?

Adult School anyone?
the husband is pursuing higher education – so he's immersed midway through the Evangelism Training Program (an accelerated ministerial education) of the Christian Reformed Church - a quite intensive 3-year course requiring a lot of reading and resulting work assignments. Even though he is very smart and adept, on top of his already brimming plate, this additional involvement requires understanding and patience on my part, sometimes amounting to having a lot less of his company and requiring a lot more tolerance. At this point or any time soon I, myself, can't even imagine going back to school *sigh* - and time aint on my side!

Major appliance decisions
having to replace the washer and dryer – the husband and I have been scouring the world of Maytag, Whirlpool, Fridigaire, front loaders, top loaders to replace the slow assisted death of our own.
We also entered the spa world of CalSpa, HotSprings, Caldera, Sundance (which we really like the product and the salesperson), even Walmart/Sam's and Costco along with others (many seen at the fair) and learned everything you'd want to know when purchasing one (you can even at some places arrange to try them out), encountering the good and the crafty sellers - to add a conducive relaxation element to our premises. Hey but we didn't have the electrical just right - sooo, getting that taken care of and then it's soak city!
The Dish on Direct - While we had Dish Satellite TV with HD which was conveniently through ATT (formerly SBC/PacBell), the customer service was horrible especially after they moved to the overseas system. Over and over we pondered switching to Direct TV – would it be worth the hassle? Wel,l it absolutely has been - a nicolishly ginormous improvement! The programming, extras, and picture quality (HD and non-), accommodation, are beyond compare. Customer Response is not only generally responsive (guess one can’t assume a correlation between those two words) but also generally quick.
Cingularly Sprinting - We also a little further back made the move from Cingular (also connected to ATT--formerly SBC/PacBell and thus the convenience) to fewer dropped calls on Sprint – yes, on Sprint! Again a great improvement in customer service - like night and day!

Fellowship
I really enjoy the women’s and couple's studies, praise team practice, and the monthly fellowships – they consume their own amount of time but are a profoundly great means of stress release and getting back in Christmindedness. Getting together with friends that are really family and seem to have a home away from home is the best medicine ever too - they know who they are!

Remembering to chil' lax
I of course take time when possible to watch movies, and take measure to de-stress my day, to stop and smell the roses, and just count my blessings and give God the glory in all things.

God's time
is His; not mine – no matter what clock I look at. He makes all things beautiful in His time.

Sometimes the time gets away from me, but I have to remember to live each day as unto the Lord for tomorrow is not promised. If I go to be will him tomorrow, I want to accomplish what today was due including sitting at and washing the feet of Jesus!
For I was hungry, and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in; I was naked, and you did not clothe Me; I was sick, and in prison, and you did not visit me. Then they will also answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to You? Then He shall answer them, saying, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me. Mat 25:42-45

“But one thing is needful, and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her”. Luk 10:42
O - look at the time!
Let's call this an October wrap. Until next time ...
